October: Three Sensemaking Sessions [Free]

I want to invite you to register for one, two, or three of our Sensemaking Sessions in October. You can click here to get your calendar invites and save the dates

We cannot do this work alone.

The sessions are designed for us to stretch beyond our current set of beliefs and assumptions.

We want to open up to adaptive possibility as we live our way through the metacrisis. By metacrisis, I am referring to the systemic nature of our current “crisis of crises:” ecological collapse, technological disruption, economic fragility, mental health epidemics, political polarization, erosion of trust, and spiritual disorientation.

The metacrisis cannot be solved by addressing issues one at a time. Instead, it requires meta-solutions. The moment calls for new patterns of cooperation. It calls for a shift at the level of consciousness and culture. A shift that allows us to become people that can hold complexity and generate wiser responses.

I am inviting you to bring your own wisdom as together we engage a set of provocations.

Leviathan

On Thursday, October 16, from 3PM to 4:30PM EDT we will gather around the film Leviathan. Alexander Beiner, Producer and Director at Studio Kainos will be joining us for the beginning of this conversation.

The main question of the Leviathan is:

Why is social trust breaking down, and how do we find it again?

It is an ambitious if incomplete effort to delve into the deep code of culture. It invites us to confront the shadows lurking at the heart of our systems. And it aims to point in the direction of hope, healing and action.

The Revolution will not be Psychologized, Part 1

On Thursday, October 23 from 3PM to 4:30PM EDT, we will gather around the Emerald Podcast’s Episode titled: The Revolution will not be Psychologized Part 1.

The episode interrogates “therapy culture.”

Let me be very clear here: I believe in therapy. I have a therapist and my wife used to be a therapist. But it is worth looking into the way therapy-speak is saturating culture. The way everything, from ritual to activism is framed in psychological terms.

Might we be leaving something behind? Something our ancestors and older traditions recognize as the very heart of the living, animate world?

The Revolution will not be Psychologized, Part 2

On Thursday, October 30 from 3PM to 4:30PM EDT we will gather around the Emerald Podcast’s Episode titled: The Revolution will not be Psychologized Part 2. This one a conversation with the wise and ever-provocative Báyo Akomolafe.

Here Báyò proposes that psychology is not separate from history. That it is bound up in the project of industrialization, commodification, and the manufacturing of the human subject. It shapes our very idea of what it means to be human.

What becomes possible when we draw on animate traditions, to open a wilder, more porous vision of being, bodies, and sentience?

A High Threshold Invitation

It is crystal clear to me that the conditions of the metacrisis do not only demand that we change our way of thinking. Our times call for an entirely different way of being. This includes changing our very approach to how we make sense and to how we come together.

To that end, while a part of me wants as many of you as possible to participate, I think this space will become truly potent and more valuable if those of you who come can agree to the terms of a high threshold invitation.

For this particular series, we are asking that you fully engage with the content before you show up. Furthermore, we would like to ask that you engage with the relevant content (again or for the first time) on the very week of our coming together. Let it be fresh in your senses. Not just your head! In your senses!

And here you will find my latest attempt to articulate the high threshold invitation for all of my work, not just this series.

If you agree, please click here to register and join us for one, two or three of the sessions.
